This was an incredible memoir. I don’t know that I have words to adequately describe this book because the story is so different from my own. And that is what I love about books like this. I get to experience in a very small way, a little of what someone else has loved for their entire life. This retro format gets he team to focus on positive and negative items, per usual. It also gets them to think about learning throughout the sprint and then asks a very expansive question: what did you long for? This final question gets the team to think forward, imaging something that is yet to be. In 1942 there was a Walter Lantz musical version, The Hams That Couldn't Be Cured. [12] The wolf (claiming he is a musical instructor) explains to the court how the three little pigs harassed him through their instrument playing which ends up destroying the wolf's house.Waldman, Steven (November 1996). Tran’s] deeply compelling memoir tells the story of growing up torn between two worlds: that of her hardworking Buddhist parents with sky-high expectations and the one she wants to discover for herself in America.” Ly Tran is just a toddler in 1993 when she and her family immigrate from a small town along the Mekong river in Vietnam to a two-bedroom railroad apartment in Queens. Ly's father, a former lieutenant in the South Vietnamese army, spent nearly a decade as a POW, and their resettlement is made possible through a humanitarian program run by the US government. Soon after they arrive, Ly joins her parents and three older brothers sewing ties and cummerbunds piece-meal on their living room floor to make ends meet. Throughout the book, Ly’s mother seems to be a quietly stable character, supporting both her husband and children. The one moment she has an outburst is when she laughs bitterly when Ly’s father yells at them for calling the police on a customer who left without paying. What do you make of Ly’s mother as an individual? What do you think about the relationship between her and Ly?

our respective stories intersect and vary in so many ways. in the days that i needed to emerge from her book, i wondered how our childhoods and lives might have been different had we managed to find each other across this wild, expansive metropolis. and how much comfort we both might have felt had we had a book like this to keep us warm at night, to kindle our hope. Growing up, Ly struggles to understand relationships and sexuality. Initially, her mother tells her not to think about it, and Ly, as a young girl, says she will never get married. As she matures, she experiences sexual harassment, which further rattles her understanding of attraction. Can you describe Ly’s journey of understanding in regards to sex and sexuality? When the time has expired, move the topic to “Done” then move the next ranked topic into “Doing”. Discuss for the allotted amount of time. The team is asked to imagine the future sprint and identify what could go wrong. The team then sorts items into lists of “what the team can control” and “what the team can’t control.” The team then brainstorms how to respond to each list accordingly. This beautifully written “masterclass in memoir” ( Elle ) recounts a young girl ’ s journey from war-torn Vietnam to Queens, New York, “showcas[ing] the tremendous power we have to alter the fates of others, step into their lives and shift the odds in favor of greater opportunity” ( Star Tribune , Minneapolis).
