About this deal

Aura and Goldman both studied Mexican and South American literature; if I knew more about it, that would have deepened my appreciation of the book even more. Francisco Goldman is positively a man familiar with the agonies of grief. He knows the living death of grief. He knows the impossiblities of having to go on living after the death of the one person who makes life worth living. And, he is the most gorgeous and generous of tellers of that experience I have ever known to be alive in my time. He's a writer of the most profound gifts to share. Like a lot of ghost books, this one is a detective story. Can Bobbie and her friends find out what happened to Mary before she gets to them? Is five days enough time to discover the truth about Mary Worthington? I was quite pleasantly surprised by Say Her Name. It was probably the most plausible horror book I've ever read, and it had such a wonderful cast of characters. I've never been a huge fan of horror books because they are often ridiculously cheesy or have rather stupid protagonists. Say Her Name managed to defeated both of those stereotypes, however, and rewrote the Bloody Mary legend in a entertaining fashion.

This is where the fun starts, and I really shouldn't have read it at night, so don't. Everything's scarier at night, and Say Her Names pretty creepy on its own, so it's no exception. Of course no one presumes it's Bloody Mary, and the three of them coincidentally getting nose bleeds at the same time is just a freak accident. And then the countdown starts and there's no denying it. Mary's coming for them. I have mixed feelings about this book. It is beautifully written and certainly a paean to the love shared by Francisco and Aura. It is touching and accurate when describing the feelings of loss and its aftermath. Aura was a poet and novelist, and the use of her own words to revivify her works quite well. Yet there is something over-the-top about his devotion to her that sometimes takes the edge off this love story. I wish I had more than 5 stars to give "Say Her Name"...I wish I could give it to everyone who has lost a loved one. I wish you'd get a copy and enjoy it for the next several days. It's a magnificient book.I've been saving Say Her Name as a Halloween read for god knows how many years, and I finally got around to it! Needless to say, I zoomed through this YA horror in a couple of sittings, and surprisingly it did get to me a bit! ALL THE STARS and MORE! Say Her Name! I wonder if many of you actually could say the name of one POC who has gone missing in your area in the last year. Just one. Say Her Name. I can name three white girls who have repeated made the new in Indianapolis over the last decade because I see their very pretty innocent faces in the news all of the time. I assume there are no POC who go missing here. Right? WRONG! They do. Everywhere. But newspapers and news stations don't show you those people unless they are part of the "rich and famous. THAT is what this book is about.

You can tell this novel is a labour of love from The Authors (perhaps the wrong words given the content. An expose of racial intolerance and social exclusion more apt) Either way its deeply personal. On vacation in Mexico, Aura has a surfing accident and dies. Goldman is devastated, and his pain is made more unbearable by his mother-in-law who blames him for her daughter's death, and vows that he will pay for what he has done. She implies that there was foul play, and not only does he have to deal with his loss, he has to worry about being arrested for Aura's death. The first thing I want to say is that the characters were amazing and there was a lot of diversity so cheers to that too! Bobbie - our protagonist - and her best friend, Naya, had one of the best relationships ever. I loved how they were such close friends and had none of the superficial or bitchy crap that a lot of YA "friendships" tend to have. They were open and honest, they joked around, but in the end they cared for each and looked out for one another. Hallelujah! I also just liked the characters in general, especially sassy Naya. The romance was good, but a little unnecessary - like most YA romances though, so nothing new. What’s most glaring and intentional about Crenshaw and AAPF’s approach to this heartbreaking, necessary and significant contribution to history is the spotlighting of the many unsung names most of us have never heard: Denise Hawkins (killed November 11, 1975). Netta Africa (May 13, 1985). LaTanya Haggerty (June 4, 1999). Tiraneka Jenkins (July 14, 2009). April Webster (December 16, 2018). I still don't know if I actually liked Eva - her character was a bit all over the place and pretty naïve (example: Her father says ""Burning that building down was no accident. Someone was cleaning house." Eva says: "Cleaning house?" What does he mean? "I'm assuming you're not talking about someone vacuuming and dusting and mopping it." Like, what? How is this in the dialogue?) And she is supposed to be a medical doctor? Would not want her to be my doctor at all. While I'm sympathetic she is grieving, and that people do make mistakes, she has a responsibility to her patients to be professional and not accidentally overdose them with medication. El desenlace me dejo pensando bastante, honestamente, no esperaba ese giro en las ultimas paginas, sobre todo porque ya antes habia habido algunos giros inesperados, sin embargo, me gusta, cuando un libro no te deja pensando es señal de que quizas no fue tan memorable como te lo parecio en un determinado momento.
