About this deal

Position the lamp so that it shines down from above onto the surface of the water. But keep the bulb at least 15cm away from the surface. Too low or too high temperature. Water temperature greatly affected the egg hatch. To hatch Triops eggs, the temperature should be in the range of 22 – 27 C (72 – 80 F).

Note: I repeat – small and shallow containers (like containers from Triops kits)! You only need to have water 2 – 3 inches deep (5 – 7 cm). Do not use your main tank for that. The point is that baby Triops will have problems finding food that is diluted in large water volumes. It will reduce their survival rate.

Triops like all aquatic creatures breath Oxygen which is dissolved in the water. The Oxygen gets into the water at the surface where water meets the air. So it is important to have a large surface area for maximum Oxygen intake. The good thing is that Triops don’t need a lot of air, but like all creatures they will live longer and grow better if there is plenty of air for them to breath. As they are omnivores, they’ll eat virtually any vegetable you put into their tank. Just ensure that you ‘par-boil’ it first (this means put the vegetable into boiling water for 5 minutes). This will soften the vegetable and makes it easier for the Triops to eat it.

The defense mechanism of evolution. According to the study, even under optimal conditions, not all eggs hatch in a given hydroperiod, some remain dormant until future hydroperiods so spreading the reproductive risk over time. The exact size that your triops will grow to is largely dependent upon the size of their container and population density. The largest triops of any species that I know of was a T. cancriformis specimen caught in the wild by Erich Eder, it measured 11 cm (~4.5 in) in overall length. That, however, was a unusually large specimen. In general, expect that triops raised in captivity will get between 4-8 cm in overall length. How long will they live? If there appears to be fluffy white clumps (bacteria) in the substrate, try and remove it. I suggest a cheap plastic Turkey Baster to do this. You can get one of these at any store. Moreover, having a substantial portion of the substrate in the tank promotes chances of recovering viable eggs since a lot will be buried away from the reach of the adult Triops. Very probably. Most populations of T. cancriformis are bisexual but female biased and can reproduce parthenogenetically. All of the reproductive forms are known within T. longicaudatus. If you only have one triops, it can probably produce viable eggs. If you have two or more, you’re probably set no matter what their reproductive pattern. These are loose weave, double layered stitched cloth, so I simply cut one corner up 4cm x 15cm and stiched up one side leaving the top open.
